The South Washington Watershed District is thrilled to formally announce the artistic partnership with Nipinet Landsem. A new mural will be installed at the Wilmes Lake Alum Treatment Facility in Woodbury, MN. Nipinet is a muralist, illustrator, and tattoo artist based in Minneapolis, MN. Much of their work involves water and our relationship to it as part of a larger network that includes plants, animals, and humans. They are a descendant of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and a citizen of the Manitoba Métis Federation. They are deeply drawn to the history of the lakes and prairies they grew up on in Minnesota and the surrounding states.

“As an Ojibwe artist, our connections to our natural resources are deeply important to me, and I view water as more of a relative than a resource to be used. I believe [this project] is the perfect opportunity to expand on this vision and illustrate the connections between us and our water in mural form.”

Landsem was selected earlier this year from a vibrant pool of applicants after a thorough review process that included SWWD’s staff, Citizen Advisory Committee, and Board of Managers, as well as staff input from the City of Woodbury. The mural will be installed at the north end of Wilmes Lake on an existing screening wall at the facility’s lift station along a trail near Tamarack Road. Production of the mural panels is currently underway, and SWWD looks forward to revealing the final installation in the months ahead!
